Attic Pest Issues<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

With the potential <\/span>of<\/span> an early spring being right around the corner, instances of attic pest issues will most likely begin to rise. <\/span>It is o<\/span>ne of the m<\/span>ost secluded areas in a home<\/span>, however, it<\/span> can\u00a0<\/span>often<\/span> produce the most pest issues. <\/span>These <\/span>are <\/span>a few of the<\/span> co<\/span>mmonly encountered<\/span> attic pests and the reasons why homeowners are seeing them this time of year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ladybug<\/span>s<\/span><\/strong>–<\/span> W<\/span>hen autumn approaches<\/span> adult beetles<\/span> seek out<\/span> protected places to spend the winter. <\/span>Studies h<\/span>ave shown that ladybug<\/span>s are at<\/span>tracted to <\/span>c<\/span>ontrasting light-dark features<\/span>, such as <\/span>dark shutters on a light background, light shutters on a dark background, windows edged with light-colored tri<\/span>m<\/span>, etc. Dwellings nea<\/span>r woods or fields are also very<\/span> prone to infestation<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span> So<\/span>,<\/span> if a customer\u2019s home has several of these aspects, they could have ladybug issues in the spring.<\/span>\u00a0As temperatures warm in late winter\/early spring, the beetles once again become active. This usually occurs first on the sunnier, southwest side of the building. As awakening beetles attempt to escape to the outdoors, some inadvertently wander inward, emerging from behind baseboards, walls, attics, suspended ceilings, etc. Since lady beetles are attracted to light, they are often seen ar<\/span>ound windows and light fixtures where families gather.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wasp<\/span>s<\/span><\/strong>–<\/span> When you’r<\/span>e seeing wasps inside a home<\/span> during<\/span> this time of year, <\/span>it is most likely<\/span> paper wasp queens emerging from overwintering locations.<\/span> In the fall<\/span> t<\/span>he<\/span>se<\/span> queens <\/span>will<\/span> look for a protected place to spend the winter <\/span>a<\/span>n<\/span>d <\/span>in many cases<\/span> insulated wall cavities fit the bill nicely.<\/span>With the onset <\/span>of <\/span>warmer weather<\/span> the queens begin to emerge from their <\/span>hibernation sites.<\/span> T<\/span>hey attempt to escape to their natural habitat outdoors,<\/span> yet<\/span> some <\/span>mistaken<\/span>ly make their way into the living areas of the home<\/span>. Since they are also<\/span> attracted to light, they typically head toward the nearest window.<\/span> This is a temporary annoyance that will run its course as the weather cont<\/span>inues to warm<\/span>. Furthermore,<\/span> while emerging queens are not normally aggressive, they wi<\/span>ll sting if they are mishandled, so the<\/span> easiest way to dispose of these insects found indoors is with a vacuum cleaner, broom or fly swatter<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carpet Beetle<\/span>s<\/span><\/strong>– <\/span>Carpet beetles<\/span> are attracted to loose, easily-<\/span>consumed food sources.<\/span> While these pests are typically <\/span>found<\/span> in living areas, <\/span>they can be encountered in the attics of homes. <\/span>Carpet beetles<\/span> thrive on lint, hair, and debris accumulating under baseboards and inside floor vents and ducts. <\/span>However, t<\/span>his pest<\/span> can also proliferate on bird nests, animal carcasses, and dead insects (cluster flies, lady beetles, stink bugs, wasps, etc.), <\/span>which can all<\/span> be<\/span> associated with attics<\/span>. <\/span>Also, i<\/span>nfestations have <\/span>been linked to carpet beetles<\/span> feeding upon old rodent bait blocks that were \u201ctossed\u201d into the attic.<\/span> Cleaning up the debris that attracts carpet beetles is the single best way to prevent them. Regularly vacuum<\/span>, sweep, and dust<\/span> areas where carpet <\/span>beetle infestations seem likely, <\/span>such as <\/span>the<\/span> attic.<\/span><\/p>\n
